DB Schenker - Tracking App

The DB Schenker Tracking App allows customers—both senders and receivers—to check the status of their cargo on the go. Over time, the legacy mobile app had become visually outdated, overcrowded with raw data, and disconnected from DB Schenker's updated web platforms.

As Lead UX/UI Designer, I led the redesign to modernize the app, clean up cluttered screens, and align the mobile tracking experience with our core web services.

My Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
Platforms: Mobile App (iOS & Android)
Key Results: Mobile Redesign, Information Architecture, Data Simplification, Visual Harmonization

The Problem

Overloaded Screens: The old app dumped massive amounts of raw data onto a single screen, making it hard for users to quickly find key tracking updates.

Visual Disconnect: The app felt outdated and did not match the modern design system used across DB Schenker’s web platforms.

Hard to Scan: Users struggled to parse long lists of shipments and track multiple packages efficiently on small mobile screens.

The Goals

Simplify Data Density: Clean up crowded views so critical status updates can be read in seconds.

Harmonize Design: Align the mobile app’s visual style and component patterns with our web ecosystem.

Improve Mobile Usability: Redesign core screens—specifically the Shipments List and Shipment Details—to feel intuitive and modern.

Key UX Improvements

The Redesigned Shipments List

In the old app, finding a specific package required opening each shipment one by one.

The Fix: I designed a new, scannable Shipments List View featuring:

  • Visual Status Bar.

  • Essential Details Only: Showed only key info (Tracking ID, Origin/Destination, Status Bar) on the main list card, keeping screens uncluttered.

Harmonized Shipment Details

The original details view listed raw, unstructured log data line by line, confusing everyday users.

The Fix: I created a unified Shipment Details View anchored by a modern Visual Tracking Timeline:

  • Visual Status Bar.

  • Expandable Data Sections: Grouped secondary information (Shipment Details, Other References, Shipment status history) into collapsible sections so users only see extra details when they tap to expand.

User Feedback and Results

During user interviews following the redesign, the response from customers was overwhelmingly positive:

Easier Status Checks: Users reported finding their shipment status in seconds without getting lost in raw data.

Modern Look and Feel: Customers noted the app felt significantly more trustworthy and aligned with modern mobile standards.

Seamless Cross-Platform Experience: Users who switched between the web portal and the mobile app experienced zero learning curve due to harmonized UI patterns.

Key Takeaways

Less is More on Mobile: On a phone screen, progressive disclosure (showing essential info first and hiding complex details behind a tap) is crucial for preventing visual overwhelm.

Consistency Builds Trust: Harmonizing mobile UI components with established web systems strengthens brand trust and makes software feel reliable.
